Prices on the receipt in hospitality

Prices on the receipt in hospitality

Prices on the receipt in hospitality

The main rule in Europe

Across the entire European Union, the same basic rule applies:

A consumer must always see the price they actually pay — including VAT.

This applies to:

  • menus

  • self-order kiosks

  • websites

  • the receipt

Can I use net prices?

Yes, but only internally or as extra information.

❌ Not allowed:

  • Showing only prices without VAT

  • Making the customer calculate VAT themselves

  • Surprising the customer at the total amount

✅ Allowed:

  • Net prices on the receipt as an intermediate step

  • VAT calculated automatically

  • Always a clear final total including VAT

What must a receipt show at minimum?

A correct receipt shows:

  • Subtotal (excluding VAT)

  • VAT amount

  • Total to pay (including VAT) ← this is the most important part
